Any person giving advice to another person about migration to New Zealand or New Zealand immigration policy, must be licensed to do so, whether the person giving the advice is in New Zealand (May 2009) or overseas (May 2010).

These rules apply to advice on all New Zealand immigration policy, including (but not limited to);

  • Residence Policy
  • Skilled Migrant Category (Points system)
  • Family, Parent Category (Bring your parents to New Zealand)
  • Family, Sibling Category (Bring your brothers or sisters to New Zealand)
  • Family, Partnership Category (Bring your spouse or partner, whether married or not.)
  • Investor Category

Work to Residence

Persons may give advice on Student Visa policy, without being licensed.

Immigration Advisers are licensed by the Immigration Advisers Authority. There are severe penalties for giving advice or claiming to be an adviser without holding a license.

Only NZ practicing solicitors (Lawyers, Attorneys) and Citizens Advise Bureaus may give advice without holding a license.
